Dreams are made of this.... Record 17lb 6oz Rainbow

This is a picture of the big fella, along with his daytime captor Gavin Kelly of St. Asaph. The 21lb monster fish finally succumbed to a Black Buzzer fished on a floating line and left to swing round with the wind. The line twitched and finally tightened as "D.J." headed off across the lake after sucking the "tasty" morsel down his throat. Not one to go quietly, "D.J." took exception to being hooked and put up a very brave struggle before Gavin managed to subdue him enough to land the big guy and have his picture taken. "D.J." was duly and successfully returned to the water swimming off with a rather disdainful flick of his rather massive tail.

 Rainbow Trout - 17lb 6oz
A superbly fit Rainbow Trout, weighing in at a massive 17lb 6oz, fell to a Gold Head Viva fished by Rhyl angler, Dave Allen. Taking the Viva, which was fished on a slow-sink line with a fairly fast retrieve, the big fella immediately put his nose down deep and stripped Dave's line down to the backing. It was a full 5 minutes before Dave had sight of it. The fish took over 10 minutes to land and had Dave's adrenalin pumping as it eventually succumbed and came to his net. The look on his face says it all...!

Other Big Fish
Other Big Fish caught at Tan-Y-Mynydd include the following....

Gary Neilson - 14 Pound 11oz

Gary Neilson from Dundee with a fine specimen of 14lb 11oz - first fishing expedition of 2001. Tried fishing for 3 days but lakes iced over. The fish was caught on the second cast of the day. First ever double, in fact the fish is twice the size of Garys' two best ever fish !
Gary Neilson

Robert Ingham
Robert Ingham has caught two doubles in one week - this one will keep him in trout steaks for quite some time. Last year Robert also caught a close to double size fish so he's turning out to be quite a big fish expert.
Photo by Neil - another reason he shouldn't be let loose with the camera !
Robert Ingham

Paul Cartmel - 15lb

This 15 pounder was caught by Paul Cartmel on the Top Pool - first double he has caught and he needed a coffee and a fag to recover !
Paul Cartmel

John Lewin
John Lewin visits us usually twice a week and has caught a few of our big boys - an ex-Irish International fisherman, he certainly knows how to catch fish.
John Lewin

Mark Gracey - 17lb 2oz
Mark Gracey with the biggest fish of the year so far !! 17lb 2oz - a peach of a fish. It was Marks' second visit to us and now he's "hooked". Tea, 2 sugar and Steve, his mate, tea no sugar. Now an ex-course angler and this beats his previous 'Double' carp.
Mark Gracey

Alan Lewis
Alan Lewis is a very good young fisherman. This is the first of his doubles - he's caught another two in the last few weeks. On one day alone he caught 13 trout (although not all big boys).
Alan Lewis

John Glaiszer
John Glaiszer has been fly fishing for 20 years plus. He's caught a lot of fish but this was his first ever double rainbow.
John Glaiszer

Gareth Griffiths - 16lb 8oz
Gareth Griffiths has been big fish hunting at Tan-y-Mynydd for some months. This 16lb 8oz clonker was certainly worth his wait. His dad, Colin, is playing catch-up !
Gareth Griffiths

Peter Ridding

Peter Ridding from Dorset had great fun with this beaut - little competition with his mate Sam Lees (next photo) on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Fish not as big as Sams' but still a fine specimen.
Has to be another of Neils photos - somebody please hide the camera from him!
Peter Ridding

Sam Lees
Here's Sam cradling his double - a bit of T.L.C. and the fish bombed off to fight another day !
Sam Lees

Tom Swift - 12lb+
Tan-y-Mynydd trout steaks are definitely on the menu at the Rock Inn at Lloc. Tom Swift was a very happy man indeed with this 12 pounder as it beat his sons' (Mike Swift) double from last year!
Tom Swift

A Proud Man...
This is a very proud man indeed - not long in the sport and already a big fish catcher! He is so proud of it, that he has decided to have the fish stuffed !!

Alan Skeates
Wait a minute - who's this ? Alan Skeates (our trainee STANIC wannabe) just had to get in on the act ! The air was blue when he caught this one - nice fish, shame about the hat...
Alan Skeates

Tony Cumberlidge
What an afternoon for Tony Cumberlidge with two doubles in a three hour session. This beauty was the first of them.
Tony Cumberlidge

Tony Cumberlidge
It's that man again... Yes, here's Tony with the second of his two doubles that he caught in his three hour session.
Tony Cumberlidge

Unsung hero
Like all the other doubles returned, this one took off like a bullet once it had recovered and rested for a while. If only we could have ice cold water all year round.

Alyn Smith

A proud moment for Alyn Smith (ex-Foxon's Tackle now North Wales Police). Undercover work means he can't show his face..
Or has Neil got hold of the camera again??? Answers on a postcard..
Alyn Smith

Wayne Jones
Here's Wayne Jones with a fine specimen. Wayne fishes for the Army and what a fisherman he is ! As well as catching this 11 pounder, on the same day he caught another 24 fish on a 2½ hour ticket. Now that's some going...
Wayne Jones

Alan Minshall
What a season Alan Minshall is having - he's caught another two doubles with us and also done well at Dragonfly Fishery, catching a 10lb+ Blue Trout. This is the first of Alans' two doubles.
Alan Minshall

Alan Minshall
The second one of Alans' doubles. Alan is well known on the North Wales fishing scene, travelling regularly from the Wirral to us and other local fisheries.
Alan Minshall

Alan Lewis
Here's that lad Alan Lewis again - as good as it is landing a double the five pounder he caught here on another visit. This one gave him a much better fight..
Alan Lewis

Gareth Griffiths' Mate
Travelling from Blaenau Ffestiniog was well worth it for Gareth Griffiths' mate. A lovely way to spend a Sunday morning - a fish that bankside tales are made of..

Bob Connor
Only one photo of Bob Connor with a double - he's caught quite a few but being a very caring fisherman, is always eager to return the fish to the pool. Bob is a very experienced and knowledgeable fisherman so - if you want advice on how to catch fish, Bob's your man !!
Bob Connor

Hmmmm...
This extremely shady customer heard wandering round the fishery muttering 'semtex' turned out to be the owner, Bryn Roberts. Bryn thinks that 'semtex ' is just as good as a fly when it comes to catching doubles. He also admits to cheating.. The new stock of doubles arrived at 6.15pm on a Tuesday evening. Neil arrived 7.30 the next morning and caught a 12 pounder but there was no one there to take his picture - shame!! Half-an-hour later Bryn arrived and gave it a bash on a cats whisker and - bingo..

 Mervyn Evans - 14 Pounder

Mervyn Evans and his 14 pounder...   This is Mervyns' first ever double - a very happy man indeed. A Viva Goldhead did the business !
Mervyn Evans

 Jonathan Copeman - 14 Pound 14oz

Jonathan Copeman and his 14 pound 14 oz specimen...   After a long fight, Jonathan landed this beauty on the Top Pool using a Cat's Whisker. The fish weighed 14lb 14oz.
Jonathan Copeman

Darren Allen - 15 Pound plus

Brian with his 15 pound plus specimen...   Another of the Allen Brothers with a double ! An interesting family feud going here. His brother presently holds the Fishery Record - but, for how long....??
Darren Allen

Ian Bradbourne - 15 Pound plus

Ian proudly shows us his 15 pound plus specimen...   Ian Bradbourne proudly shows us his 15lb specimen. Ian caught this beauty in the Farm Pool on a Cat's Whisker.
Ian Bradbourne

 David Allen - 16lb plus

Dave Allen and his 15lb rainbow...   David Allen with his 15lb plus rainbow trout - this is the second time it's been caught ! The fish has a distinctive mark on it's nose. Caught in the Top Pool on an Orange Lure.
David Allen

 Peter Borroman - 15lb 5oz

Peter and his 15lb 5oz rainbow..   Peter with the 15lb 5oz clonker that made him the May Troutmaster Winner. Caught in the Farm Pool on a Glowhead Montana. Doesn't he look proud - and rightly so !
Peter Borroman

 Mark Rivetts - 15lb plus

Mark and the 15lb plus specimen..   This is our pet ! This is the second time it's been caught, this time by Mark Rivetts. Look out for it's distinctive nose which can just be made out in the picture.
Mark Rivetts

 Dave Fink - 8lb 8oz

Author with 8lb 8oz Rainbow...   Our WebMaster, Dave Fink, has finally got on the Big Fish Board with this 8lb 8oz Hen Rainbow. An Orange and Yellow home-tied lure, fished on a floating line in Top Pool, did the business and the fish took 12 minutes to land, due to the weed.
Dave Fink
